Spring 1

Our School & Community

Our topic for this half term is 'Our School & Community'. We will be learning about the area that we live in, including how to write our home and school addresses as part of our Geography topic. Our first core book is 'The Jolly Postman' and we will learn to write a letter, including beginning with an address and we will discuss how letters and parcels are delivered. In Science, we will learn about different habitats and we will explore the plants and animals that live in the habitats within our school environment. In D&T, we will design and make our own postal van that moves on wheels and we will also have the chance to practise colour mixing to paint our vehicles.

Internet Safety Day

Monday 5th February was Internet Safety Day and we took part in different activities helping us to think about how to keep ourselves safe online. In year 2, we worked in groups to perform a role play about children watching a video on YouTube without asking a grown up. Have a look at our photos!

Our favourite part was making up and performing our very own song, delivering some key messages about Internet Safety. We hope you enjoy it!

You should keep your details safe!

SATs & Information Talk

Thank you to those of you that were able to join us for our year 2 information talk. For anyone who was unable to make it, below is the PowerPoint that was used to share key information. Please come and see me if you have any questions.

ICT

In ICT we have been have been learning about programming using a set of simple instructions called an algorithm. We have carried out lots of fun activities using iPads, Computers and Bee-Bots to help us.

Stone Pals

We finally got to hide our stones in the school grounds for our partners. What an exciting time we had! We used our letters to help give us clues about where the stones were, thinking carefully about the prepositions used e.g. under, next to, behind. Take a look at the photos of our hunt!

The Lost Acorns/Surrey Rocks

Our new core book is The Lost Acorns and we have enjoyed reading the story of the squirrel who loses his acorns! We have been finding out about 'Surrey Rocks', something that is going on locally to us. Please click on the website link for more details.

As part of our home learning, we collected different pebbles and stones that are like our treasure from the story. We will paint our stones then hide them for a partner somewhere in the school ground. We will learn to use prepositions to describe the position of our hidden stones, such as behind, in, under and next to. Have a look at our stones and the places we thought about hiding them!

Making a Postal Van

This week, we have enjoyed learning how to make a moving vehicle. We had to design, make and evaluate our van using the letter that we received from the Jolly Postman. This told us that our vans had to be strong and stable enough to carry his letters and parcels on his delivery rounds. Take a look at our learning!

Gymnastics

In PE, we are beginning to learn different skills in gymnastics. We had a go at travelling across different pieces of equipment in different ways and we practised jumping off equipment, landing safely. Have a look at our photos!

Please have a look at this overview for ideas on how to support your child's learning at home.
