Summer 1 2015

In April we had the Nursery Rhyme History Box delivered to our school.

In May we had a day of dance with Jane and Jeremy.  See below for more information and pictures.

Nursery Rhyme History comes to our Nursery

Through re-enacting a number of traditional nursery rhymes:

  • Jack and Jill
  • Polly put the kettle on
  • Mary had a little lamb
  • Wee Willie Winkie

The children have been learning about what life was like long ago.  The History box had props, for the Jack and Jill Nursery Rhyme, that include a very heavy wooden pail, a stone wear vinegar bottle with cork stopper and a brown paper 'cap'.  Long ago there would have been no taps for water. Jack and Jill would have had to collect water from a well with a pail.  When Jack fell down and hurt himself they would have used vinegar and brown paper.

When dressing up for Wee Willie Winkie there was a night gown and night cap rather than pyjamas. In the days before electricity Wee Willie Winkie would have had to use a candle or lantern for light.  We also had the opportunity to explore a candle snuffer and a wick trimmer.

The girls also had a chance to dress up in a maids apron with a mob cap and pretend to make the tea without an electric kettle.  There were some wonderful artefacts for the children to explore including: a copper kettle, a silver teapot, tea leaves in a canister, tea strainer and tea infuser.
