Phonics
At Farnborough Grange, we follow the Read Write Inc phonics programme, devised by Ruth Miskin, that is used in over 5000 schools across the country. We start our programme in Nursery and continue it through into Year 2. Children receive daily phonics lessons, focusing on both new sounds and whole word reading.
The children learn the phonic sounds in presecribed order and are split into three sets- please see the information below.
These are the Set 1 Speed Sounds written with one letter:
m a s d t i n p g o c k u b f e l h r j v y w z x
These are the sounds written with two letters (your child will call these ‘special friends’):
sh th ch qu ng nk ck
Set 2 Speed Sounds

Set 3 Speed Sounds

We use a toy frog called Fred who helps us to read words.
Fred can only say the sounds in a word and needs our children to help him blend the word. Fred will say the sounds and children will work out the word. For example, Fred will say the sounds c–a–t, and children will say the word cat. This is Fred Talk: sounding out the word.
There are lots of parent tutorials to learn all about how to support your child as they learn with Read Write Inc. Phonics, with detailed ideas and advice on pronouncing pure sounds, blending, and digraphs- click this link to find them: Parent guide to Read Write Inc. Phonics | Oxford Owl
