Geography at Farnborough Grange

Intent

At Farnborough Grange, we intend to inspire pupil curiosity about their world and to engage them in outdoor learning and geographical enquiry. We want to equip children with the knowledge and skills that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Geography, by nature is an investigative subject and we want our children to become ‘Geographers’. Through creative planning, children will take part in collaborative and discussion based approaches to their learning, which will bring Geography to life and give our children the opportunity to become immersed in and explore new learning themselves.

Implementation

  • At our school, geography is taught within each year group through our enquiry-based curriculum.
  • Our broad, enquiry-based curriculum engages and excites the children and develops their understanding of the world around them.
  • Teachers promote exciting experiences through which the children can develop and use the basic skills of geography.
  • Children will learn essential geographical skills such as: understanding and using simple maps, identifying locations, comparing locations and asking questions about what they see.
  • Each lesson begins with retrieval practice as a way of reviewing previous learning. It also gives children an opportunity to share what they already know about a topic.
  • Teachers use assessment for learning in each lesson to ensure that misconceptions are highlighted and addressed.
  • We celebrate the world’s diversity and allow the children to explore new places during special ‘Geography Days’.
