Summer 1 - The King of the castle

This half term will take us back in time, exploring monarchs across the years right to the present day. In History, we will identify events and significant people from the past and how this has impacted our today. In English, we will design our own dragons, designed to protect the castle, and will write fact files for our imaginary creatures. In D&T, we will learn to making moving pictures and create our own fire-breathing dragons.

We love reading to help us with our learning! Some of our key texts for this learning enquiry include...

Week 6: 22.05.23:

Year 1 have had another busy week full of exciting learning!

For our Great Work Share, we went to see Year R and showed our moving slider pictures as part of our learning we did for St George and the Dragon.

In English, the children retold and rewrote ‘The Queen’s Hat’ story with a twist as, The King’s Tie!

Maths was all about looking at arrays to write repeated addition number sentences, using sweets on Friday! (Owls and Rabbits please continue to practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s at home.)

In R.E the children finished their learning on, ‘Why is the Bible an important book for Christians?’ The teachers were so impressed with how much the children have remembered about their learning on Christianity.

In History we had Windsor castle visit us to learn more about the roles of Kings, Queens and even knights. The children were so engaged in the workshop and even got to try on some costumes and hold some props.

Wishing everyone a lovely sunny half term break, see you all on Monday 6th June smiley

Week 5: 15.05.23

Wow, what a busy week once again!

We have continued learning about the Royals and put the Queen's most important work on an enormous timeline, which showed just how long she reigned for! King Charles has also done great work but we don't yet know how long he will reign for.

On Thursday, Rabbit class had their assembly and Mrs Taylor felt like the proudest teacher in the whole world!

Test us on our 2's - we have been working on this in maths. Challenge: what is the rule that the 2's always end in?

On Friday, we read the book, 'Ravi's Roar' which taught us all about how to control our anger and we have taken home 'Tiger tips'  for how to help us when we are angry.

Week 4: 08.05.23

In our English lessons, we have started to learn about the story 'The Queen's Hat' and have enjoyed acting out the story being characters such as The Queen, a guard and even a baby!

Yet again we have been packing in lots of fun in our Maths lessons, learning about volume and capacity using the words 'empty', 'nearly empty', 'half', 'nearly full' and 'full'.

In our Science lesson this week, we looked at describing the weather (rainfall and daylight hours) across the four seasons.

We swapped around this week, with Owls using the laptops to learn about word processing and the functions of some of the keys, while Rabbits went to the Music Room and improvised with glockenspiels.

Week 3: 01.05.23

We have been packing in lots of fun in our Maths lessons, learning about mass and comparing weights using the words 'heavier' and 'lighter'.

We have finished our moving slider pictures in DT and can't wait to share them!

Thursday was a great opportunity to commemorate King Charles III's upcoming Coronation with a small picnic, and some of us loved celebrating with families outside, or with adults in the hall.

On Friday Rabbits used the laptops and brand new mice (!) to learn about word processing and the functions of some of the keys, while Owls went to the Music Room and improvised with glockenspiels.

Have (another) great long weekend- see you Tuesday!

Week 2: 24.04.23

Year 1 have had an action-packed week, starting with a dragon hunt in our grounds (we love the new outdoor Reading Den!) for English, to help with some suffixes (-est and -er) as well as dragon descriptions!

In Maths we have continued with place value up to 50, using part whole models and working out missing numbers.

Friday was very exciting as we celebrated MayDay a little early and had some guests in to teach us some dancing around the MayPole!

Sadly, we have said goodbye to Mrs Church and Mrs Lloyd this week; they will be missed. But Miss Ahmed will be in Owls Monday- Thursday, with Mrs Stroudley on Fridays.

Week 1: 17.4.23

We hope everyone had a great break; the children were excited to be introduced to our new topic; ‘King of the Castle; Who are the Royals?’ A dragon was even seen in our classrooms on the CCTV (!) so in English we had a lot of questions to ask, as well as learning the story of Saint (St.) George and the dragon.

Our maths focus has been on counting in groups of tens and then adding ones - we all did brilliantly!

The dragon theme continued in DT where we have looked at moving pictures within story books and have planned our own designs, to make a moving dragon picture for the Year R children.
